# The Basics of Learning to Drive: A Guide for New Drivers

As a driving instructor at Thames Driving School, I've helped countless students navigate the exciting journey of learning to drive. Today, I'm excited to share with you the essential steps to start your driving adventure. Let's dive in!

## Getting Your Provisional Licence

Before you can even think about sitting behind the wheel, you'll need to obtain your provisional driving licence. Here's what you need to know:

- The minimum age to learn to drive a car is 17 (16 if you receive Mobility Allowance)[1](https://www.thamesdrivingschool.com/courses.html).
- You can apply for your provisional licence when you're 15 years and 9 months old[5](https://www.gov.uk/apply-first-provisional-driving-licence).
- Apply online through the DVLA website or pick up a D1 form from your local Post Office[1](https://www.thamesdrivingschool.com/courses.html)[5](https://www.gov.uk/apply-first-provisional-driving-licence).
- Online applications cost £34, while postal applications cost £43[5](https://www.gov.uk/apply-first-provisional-driving-licence).
- Make sure you can read a number plate from 20 metres away[5](https://www.gov.uk/apply-first-provisional-driving-licence).

## Your First Driving Lesson

Once you've got your provisional licence, it's time for your first lesson! Here's what to expect:

- We'll start with the basics: moving off and stopping[7](https://www.thamesdrivingschool.com/driving-basics.html).
- You'll learn car control through exercises like the turn in the road[7](https://www.thamesdrivingschool.com/driving-basics.html).
- As you gain confidence, we'll progress to road procedures and junctions[7](https://www.thamesdrivingschool.com/driving-basics.html).
- Each student receives a personal logbook to track their progress[7](https://www.thamesdrivingschool.com/driving-basics.html).

## Theory and Hazard Perception

While you're learning practical skills, don't forget about the theory side:

- We provide comprehensive Theory and Hazard Perception training[7](https://www.thamesdrivingschool.com/driving-basics.html).
- You'll have access to DSA-approved books, CDs, and DVDs[7](https://www.thamesdrivingschool.com/driving-basics.html).
- Special support is available for those with additional needs[7](https://www.thamesdrivingschool.com/driving-basics.html).

## Booking Your Tests

When you're ready, we can help you book both your Theory and Practical tests. You'll need:

- Your driving licence number
- Theory test pass certificate number (for the practical test)
- The date you passed your theory test[7](https://www.thamesdrivingschool.com/driving-basics.html)
